Behind the Scenes

Each audio track is accurately recorded and edited to convey a specific sound.

Every single microphone is set up for a precise goal: recording the wind, a voice, a crowd, a narrator, a certain atmosphere. Mics have different characteristics (shape, polarity, size) that could help the user make the right decision in relation to what the subject of the recording is.

Therefore, the recording process begins with the most accurate choice of microphones to involve.

The team engaged with a wide variety of microphones: Zoom H2n, Shotgun, Zoom H1n, Shure SM7B, Tascam DR05X and Piezo contact.

For each one of them there has been an in-depth research to fully understand their capabilities and functionality in order to have clear high quality audio recordings, that can emphasize the sound within.

As well as microphones, for many of the sounds within the different categories provided by SFX90, it has been necessary to involve specific synthesizer for the creation of electronic/abstract sounds.

After recording, all the files are exported on a computer machine and are deeply analysed: choosing the perfect sound requires patience and a developed sense of criticism in order to avoid any waste of time and work directly on the necessary recordings.

All the files are renamed and imported into Pro Tools, where the actual magic happens.

Once the tracks are imported the first action taken is a careful listening. The tracks are then trimmed, highlighting the sections that could produce the right sound. Subsequentially, fades at the beginning and at the end of the track are added, to let the sound start and dissolve avoiding hard cuts and change of tone or interferences.

The volume and the gain are then adjusted in relation to the specific needs.

Once the track looks clean enough from distractive unwanted noises, the mixing process brings the sound to life.

Several effects and plugins are added to the track to distort, change or improve the sound.

Each choice is made by fully understanding what the outcome is supposed to be and how the original sound can be turned into something totally different.

The files are then exported as .mp3 files, in stereo mode (but also convertible into mono).
